In a recent podcast, I interviewed Greg Gibson on healthy leadership. Greg is currently planting Nations Church in Washington, DC with his family. He also leads a global network of pastors and church planters called SALT and coaches other pastors through Gibson Leadership. Greg has a long history of leading and architecting healthy teams inside, and outside, the church. If you are ready to end the cycle of unhealthy leadership then this episode is for you! Here are three of my biggest action steps that you can take away from this episode:
1 - Define Your Why
I love that Greg starts by encouraging leaders to identify their "why"!
I've been in ministry long enough to know that our "why" can get compromised so easily. In the beginning it was about God and serving people but, our "why" can shift to productivity, attendance, money, and influence.
Now none of those things that I just listed are bad. However, none of those things are a healthy "why" for ministry. I think that you need to work hard, be productive, reach more people this year than you did last year, and grow your influence.
If you want to be a healthy leader then don't make "what" you do become "why" you do it.
2 - Learn Yourself
How well do you know yourself?
In our time together Greg talked about "diving beneath the surface" and doing some emotional and mental work to understand yourself better. I don't think we talk about this enough in the church.
Over the past several years I have used Patrick Lencioni's Working Genius , Jean Greaves & Travis Bradberry's Emotional Intelligence 2.0, and Peter Scazzero's book Emotionally Healthy Spirituality to help me understand my own "Head, Heart & Hands" like Greg mentioned.
3 - Get A Coach
If you don't feel healthy you go to a doctor. So if your leadership feels unhealthy you need to see a coach.
I won't make a long sales pitch here...I'll just appeal to your soul. Don't suffer in silence. Get a coach who has a higher ceiling than you do and let them help you create systems and strategies that are going to pull you out of the rut you are stuck in and help you become a healthy leader.
Let's connect and use my experience to help you get healthy.
